Book Club: What I’m Reading
Last year, I joined a Book Club, and I have to tell you—I love Book Club.
It happened completely by chance. One evening, I ran into my friend Nanette from church choir at a local coffee shop. She was there with her book club, and I mentioned how much I loved to read and how I wished I were in a book club.
And just like that, Nanette invited me!
One of my favorite things about Book Club is that it gets me out of my reading comfort zone. I've discovered so many wonderful books I probably never would have picked up on my own, and it's continually nudging me beyond my default genres.
Earlier this summer, we read Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, and y'all...I absolutely loved this book.
It's one of those stories that makes you feel good about people and life again. It's sweet and hopeful and inspiring without feeling forced. I finished it feeling like maybe there's a little more goodness in the world than we sometimes remember.
And there was something else that kept nagging at me while I was reading it.
I knew absolutely nothing about the book before I started, but as I read, I kept thinking, This sounds like downtown Columbus.
Finally, my curiosity got the best of me and I looked it up.
Lo and behold—it IS!
The fictional town of Golden was inspired by Columbus, Georgia, which made me love the story even more.
I assumed everyone had heard of this book by now, but just last week I talked to two different friends who had never even heard of it!
So apparently I have a job to do. 😂
I'm officially spreading the good news:
If you haven't read Theo of Golden yet, add it to your list.
It's warm, uplifting, beautifully human, and the kind of book that reminds you of the difference one person can make simply by noticing and caring about the people around them. (If you haven’t pieced it together yet, apparently this is a theme for me in 2026 that I had not planned!)
I think it's one you'll remember for many years to come.
